Fandom Diaries

ToyCon 2018 Was the Start of My Fandom Journey

When adults get tired of responsibilities for a while, where do you think they go?

Apparently… ToyCon.

Last weekend, despite the rain and terrible weather, my partner and I, together with my best friend and her partner, decided to go to ToyCon 2018 at SMX Convention Center.

And honestly?

It ended up becoming one of the most unexpectedly fun days I’ve had in a long time.

The moment we entered the convention hall, everything already felt exciting.

So many people.

Different fandoms.

Different interests.

Different personalities.

But everyone was there because they genuinely loved something.

And I think that’s what made the atmosphere feel so fun.

Growing up, I honestly didn’t have a lot of toys.

So seeing huge displays of collectibles, figures, comics, and merchandise everywhere strangely felt healing in a small way.

It felt like adults were being allowed to reconnect with younger versions of themselves for a while.

And honestly?

I think we all needed that sometimes.

Of course, aside from the toys and displays, one of my favorite parts of the event was watching the live performances.

That was actually where I saw Kaye Cal and KJWAN perform live for the first time.

And surprisingly, I enjoyed it way more than I expected.

I already knew a few Kaye Cal covers from YouTube before this event, but hearing her sing live felt different.

More real.

More emotional somehow.

You could really feel how much people genuinely loved her music.

And honestly, I think that was the moment I slowly started becoming a fan myself.

KJWAN was also amazing live.

I already knew Marc Abaya from television before, but I honestly didn’t expect their live performance to feel that intense and fun.

The crowd energy alone made the experience memorable.

Looking back now, I think ToyCon became more than just a random convention day for me.

It became one of those memories that quietly stayed.

A rainy day.

Good music.

Fun conversations.

People enjoying the things they love unapologetically.

And somehow, I think that was also the beginning of my own fandom journey too.

One day at a time,
